In this episode, I discuss the Barbie movie and how it relates to feminism and the patriarchy. I dive into actionable steps we can take now, to make a meaningful impact and help build generations of healthy men and women.
The Barbie movie has captured the hearts of many with its engaging theme, stellar acting, and captivating musical numbers. However, as we leave the theater, it’s essential to ponder: What’s next? How can we turn this entertaining film into a catalyst for dismantling the patriarchy and nurturing a society of healthy, strong men and women? In this blog post, we explore three crucial aspects that the Barbie movie didn’t explicitly teach us about ending the patriarchy and how we can take action to create positive change.
One prominent message missing from the Barbie movie is the significance of women having a say in decisions concerning their own bodies. The scene with an all-male board making decisions for women reflects the unfortunate reality in today’s society. Imagine a world where women exclusively discuss and decide what’s best for their bodies. By listening to one another’s experiences and gathering stories, we can create meaningful discussions outside any male leadership or agenda. Empowering women to actively participate and vote on matters that impact them is a crucial step in dismantling the patriarchy.
The movie also hints at the subtle influence of the patriarchy, affecting not only women but also men, as seen in the theme of competition between the Kens. The characters’ inability to express their emotions highlights the ways society molds individuals to conform to gender norms. Awakening to the ways we are conditioned and brainwashed by the patriarchy is vital for collective growth. By embracing emotional intelligence and dismantling harmful stereotypes, we can foster an environment where everyone can thrive.
Women’s bodies are often viewed through the eyes of others, perpetuating a cycle of female rivalry and self-comparison. The impact of catcalling and unsolicited remarks on women’s self-image cannot be ignored. We must raise our girls to appreciate their bodies for their strength and uniqueness, and boys to embrace a broader definition of beauty beyond societal expectations. Creating a culture of body acceptance and self-love will empower future generations to value themselves and others for their true essence.
1. Offer support and mentorship to women who might be struggling. Ask how you can help them overcome obstacles and promote their growth.
2. Instead of stealing ideas or taking credit, lift women’s voices and ensure they receive the recognition they deserve.
3. Celebrate women’s achievements, big and small. Show appreciation for their talents and contributions.
4. Avoid negative talk and gossip about others. Engage in conversations that build connections and support each other.
5. If you encounter a sexist joke or comment, don’t ignore it. Ask the speaker to clarify their intentions and encourage open discussions on the matter.
