What if you could create a team that not only took tasks off your plate, but a team that thrives, communicates effortlessly, and solves some of the biggest problems in your business? Billy Boughey of Elevate Experiences is the author of Culture Reconstructed, and he joins me in this episode to drop some major knowledge bombs about hiring the right team members, creating a healthy workplace culture, having difficult conversations with your team, and so. much. more! Listen in to cultivate the team culture for your business.
Key Takeaways:
- Remote teams are a revolutionary way of doing business, and Billy is a master of creating a healthy workplace culture.
- Everyone has a unique gift, and how they show up in the workplace and deliver that gift is so important for adding value to their lives, as well as having a successful team.
- Culture is the things that you allow in the workplace
- The number one rule in culture is that your team members support what they help create.
- Every successful culture has 3 things: Energy, Community, and Connection
- Energy: How do you connect from an energy standpoint? High fives? Handshakes? How does that translate into communication with clients?
- Community: How are you helping your team build community with each other?
- Connection: Every great culture have their people connected to the brand and talking about it in positive ways within their communities.
- How can you get your team to say “Thank goodness it’s Monday?” Instead of “Thank goodness it’s Friday?”
- Billy’s advice for bringing on a new team member:
- Write down the problems you have in your business, and find a person who can solve those problems for you.
- Look for someone who is positive, and someone who is nimble and can adjust easily to different situations and tasks.
- When looking for interns, look at where you could use help in your business and set the standard high for them (more than getting coffee). Treat them just as a normal team member.
- Billy’s advice on difficult conversations in the workplace:
- Be able to separate interactions with them by “friendly” vs. “boss” and be clear upfront what kind of conversation you’re having with them.
- What makes a good leader?
- A good leader is self-aware, and has a heart to grow.
- The best leaders ask themselves how they can show their vulnerability. When you screw up, be the first person to admit it.
- Serve your team as much as possible and they will thrive and possibly even stay on longer.
- Think about how you can get your team to say “thank goodness it’s Monday” instead of “thank goodness it’s Friday”
- How does a leader get out of their own way? Delegate.
- Delegation Stair-step
- Do for “will you do this for me”
- Do with “will you sit down and do this with me”
- Think with “will you think about this with me”
- Think for “think for and make decisions for the business”
- You can’t do everything in your business. You have to find someone and train them to think the way that you think, and on low-level pieces let them do it without you.
