The 3 Steps to Telling More Compelling Stories for Your Business

by D'Arcy Benincosa

Are you telling the right stories for your brand?

Are you doing enough storytelling in your business? Are you telling the right stories for your brand? Do you even know how to tell a compelling story? Tune into this episode with Storytelling Expert and Photographer/Cinematographer, Nathan Freitas. Nathan and I share a candid conversation about what makes a compelling story, what stories you SHOULDN’T be telling, and how to tell your stories so they connect to your customers and clients. And if you’re ready for a real treat, tune into part 2 of this episode for a special surprise called “Decadent Desserts”

About Nathan:

Nathan Freitas has spent the past 18 years telling stories building out sales and marketing processes are some of the largest companies in the world like Salesforce.com and Microsoft.

Fed up with the lack of human in most sales and marketing today, he’s on a mission to cut out all the hype, BS, and start engaging and telling human stories that move people.

What makes a compelling story?

  • It’s not always the most dramatic story that relates.
  • There are many beautiful stories you can tell – don’t let your head tell you your story isn’t important enough
  • Storytelling should make you feel a deep human emotion
  • Does your story serve your clients in any way?
  • Humans can intuitively sense the energy you’re coming from when you’re telling a story. When you’re just telling it to make a sale versus if you’re telling it to create a connection or serve.
  • Does your story use The Hero’s Journey Framework? See below instructions for more information…

How to Tell a Story that Connects to Customers & Clients:

  1. Pretend you’re sitting across the table from someone having lunch or coffee. Who is that person? Define them.
  2. Now that you know who you’re sitting across from, it’s important to choose a story that will resonate, connect, and serve them in some way. You wouldn’t tell a story about fostering your niece if you’re talking to a high-end wedding couple.
  3. Use The Hero’s Journey Storyline: Start your story with a hero (a past client maybe) who was facing a challenge and you came in and became their guide that led them through to a successful conclusion.

Example: A bride and her mother planning a wedding and they were faced with the challenge of finding all the perfect vendors and their biggest desire was to get the wedding published in Martha Stewart. They hired you as their photographer and you helped suggest vendors who would give them the most beautiful day and service. Because of this, they were able to connect and have this magical and fun experience preparing for their wedding and the wedding graced the pages of the September issue of Martha Stewart Weddings in a 10 page spread.

We challenge you…

  • If you had a bumper sticker that explained your business, what would it say?
  • For more balance in your life, take a personal day (or night) each week.
  • Pay attention to the people you love listening to and the stories they’re telling. Why do you love listening to them?
