Growing a Long Term Photography Business (without the Burnout)

The biggest thing I hear from photographers is how temporary their career is. Almost all of the photographers who go through my coaching programs talk about how they plan to pivot into something else (which I do highly recommend if that’s your dream). 4 Tips for Longevity in the Photography Industry:

1. Look outside your industry to learn business strategies

This ensures that you are developing a business that is unique from your competitors and isn’t just a carbon copy of everyone else’s systems and strategies.

2. Artistry is not the only thing you need

When you’re starting out a lot of times you have to wear all the hats in your business. 

• Director – the face of the brand, the artist
• Producer – creating content, promoting and marketing
• Manager – handling the business side of things (Invoices, contracts, emails, etc.)

When you start to grow, you can focus on being the Director and hire out the other roles.

As a creative, you have an advantage when it comes to marketing and the business side of things because you have the opportunity to create out-of-the-box solutions and content.

3. Being Consistent = Being Trustworthy

You need to be able to produce the work you share every time you pick up your camera. This means becoming the master at your art, lighting, etc. and taking control of the work you put out into the world. This will result in repeat clients more referrals.

4. Don’t follow trends

Instead focus on your own unique perspective and signature style. When your work looks the same as everyone else the only thing they can compare you on is your price and you start attracting price shoppers. 

When you have a signature style your value increases and you can charge more.
