In this episode, I discuss why people troll and how to handle internet trolls. I share my experiences of being on both sides of trolling and how I have grown through these experiences.
In the business of innovation, trolls often rear their heads, challenging the new and unfamiliar.
When you embark on a pioneering journey, going against the grain and breaking new ground, trolls inevitably emerge. They represent the remnants of the old way of life, resistant to change and innovation. In fact, encountering trolls can be an indication that you’re doing something right. Their presence signifies growth, triggering those who aspire to be where you are. As you continue to evolve and expand, you will be misunderstood. People who are not aligned with your vision will find you, attempting to bring you down.
Unfortunately, even friends can turn into trolls, causing harm to your business. Establish clear boundaries, including contracts, deliverables, and guidelines for who is allowed to comment and engage. Protect yourself and your business from any potential damage.
Trolls are often drawn to your success and progress. They may attack you through mean comments on ads or try to discredit your achievements. It’s essential to develop a thick skin and not let their negativity affect you. Find humor in their remarks and remember that their opinions do not define your worth or talent.
As a business owner, it’s crucial to stand up for yourself, your business, and your creative abilities. Embrace your unique talent and don’t let trolls undermine your confidence. Listen to constructive feedback, but disregard baseless criticism from those who lack expertise or experience.
While trolls can be hurtful, there might be nuggets of truth hidden within their negative comments. Reflect on their feedback objectively and see if there’s anything you can learn or improve upon. No one is perfect, and acknowledging your mistakes allows you to grow and evolve.
Trolls often thrive in group settings, where mob mentality takes hold. Avoid getting caught up in toxic text threads or online communities that solely focus on complaining or tearing down others. Instead, foster a solution-focused mindset and engage in meaningful, face-to-face interactions to bring about real change.
When faced with trolls, trust your intuition. Understand that you rarely hear both sides of the story, and trolls often lack the complete facts. Rather than getting caught up in their narratives, stay true to your values and purpose.
Remember, your long-term actions and integrity will always speak louder than any short-term mistakes or misunderstandings. Stay committed to your vision and navigate the challenges with grace and resilience. If necessary, seek legal advice to protect yourself and move forward strategically.
In the face of trolls, fight the good fight. Stand tall and unapologetic for your beliefs, your business, and your talent. Embrace innovation and change, even if it means facing opposition. By staying true to yourself and handling adversity with integrity, you’ll emerge stronger and more successful than ever before.
And always remember, the opinions of trolls do not define your worth or the impact you have on those who truly appreciate and resonate with your work. Keep pushing forward and let your brilliance shine through.
