Healing the Collective Fear of Being Seen

by D'Arcy Benincosa

If your brand feels beige, you may assume you need a new website, a better brand shoot, or someone to help you figure out what makes you different.

But what if you already know what makes you different? What if you’ve simply become very good at hiding it?

I spent time in Glastonbury recently, and I loved how gloriously strange it was. The High Street is full of herbs, tarot, crystals, goddesses, esoteric books, and shops with entire rooms devoted to wands. Even I could walk into one place and think, Okay, this is the edge of me, then walk into the next and think, Where has this been my whole life?

Nobody had moved the wands to the back to make the shop easier for everyone to understand. The people who wanted them knew where to go.

I came home thinking about the women I work with and how often we do the opposite. We soften an opinion, leave a spiritual gift out of our copy, choose the photograph that feels more acceptable than true, or wait until we have one more qualification before saying what we know. After enough of those choices, a brand can begin to look like everyone else’s. We might call it a branding problem, even though the decisions began somewhere deeper.

Where does the fear come from?

Women have a complicated history with visibility. Stories about the dangerous woman—the woman who knows too much, wants too much, speaks with authority, or cannot be neatly categorized—remain part of our cultural imagination.

I also believe fear can travel through families and generations. You may understand that through ancestral patterns, family systems, Jung’s collective unconscious, the body, or spiritual consciousness. However you understand it, many women know the message by heart: Don’t be too loud. Too ambitious. Too mystical. Too sexual. Too intelligent. Too powerful. Too much.

You may consciously disagree with every word of that message and still feel your body hesitate when it’s time to be fully visible.

Underneath the hesitation is a tender question:

If they see all of me, will I still be loved? Will I still belong?

That question can follow us straight into our businesses. We hire the designer and choose the fonts, but quietly ask which version of ourselves will be easiest for everyone to approve of. The result may be beautiful. It may also leave out the very things someone needed to see in order to recognize us.

A different kind of safety

Healing the fear of being seen cannot mean arranging a life where nobody criticizes, misunderstands, rejects, or leaves us. We cannot control every response to our work or our becoming.

I think safety has to mean something sturdier: I can remain with myself when someone else does not.

I can hear criticism and decide whether there is something useful in it. I can be misunderstood without immediately rewriting myself for approval. I can make a mistake and repair it. I can lose something and trust that I have the intelligence, support, and capacity to meet what happens next.

That kind of trust grows through experience. You say something you would normally have softened. You share the photograph that feels most like you. You hold a boundary. You make the offer. Then you notice what happened—and that you are still here.

You do it again. Gradually, you give yourself a new experience of being visible.

What becomes possible when we stop hiding?

This is the part that moves me most. Imagine what women might make if less of our energy went toward managing how we are perceived. Imagine the art, books, businesses, healing, wealth, and leadership that could come from gifts we have kept carefully out of sight.

That is part of what I mean when I talk about a new earth. I don’t imagine a world where nothing painful happens. I imagine more people becoming conscious of the fear they inherited, learning how to meet it, and choosing what to create instead of automatically passing it on.

The old reality says: Hide so you can belong.

A new one might say: Belong to yourself so completely that you no longer need to hide.

Your brand may change when you do that. Your words, photographs, offers, boundaries, and relationships may change too. They change because you are allowing more of yourself into the work.

Maybe the opposite of beige was never a color. Maybe it was always self-trust.

A question for this weekend: If I weren’t afraid to be seen, who would I be—and how would I show up?

IN THIS EPISODE
