Content Is Dead: Why the Creator Economy Is Over — and the Artist Economy Is Next

by D'Arcy Benincosa

Most photographers aren’t studying photography anymore — they’re studying Instagram. In this solo episode, D’Arcy confesses to a decade of studying the wrong things — algorithms, funnels, hooks — and makes the case for what comes after the creator economy: the artist economy. It starts with Gene Kelly, soaked to the skin and swinging off a lamppost, and the strange grief of watching real devotion.

I spent a decade studying Instagram — algorithms, launches, hooks, what died last month. Then I watched Gene Kelly’s tap number and felt something I wasn’t expecting: grief. Not because I want to tap dance — because I was watching devotion, and I missed it.

This episode is my confession, and my way back: the case for studying art instead of the feed, my 4 S’s turned into an artistic framework, and a practice I’m naming Creative Studies. Choose one study this week — then come tell me what you chose.

About:

The sentence the whole episode is built on — you cannot consistently photograph what you refuse to cultivate within yourself

  • How apprenticeship became consumption
  • The 4 S’s (Story, Style, Structure, Sales) turned ninety degrees into an artistic framework
  • Creative Studies: the practice D’Arcy wants to name for the industry
  • Her own year of study — novels, old films, daily writing, ten rolls of film at a family session
  • Why The English Edit retreat exists, and Claire’s story
  • One study to start this week.

In This Episode:

  • (00:12) The confession: a decade of algorithms — and the Gene Kelly tap number that felt like grief
  • (03:32) Most photographers are no longer studying photography — they’re studying Instagram
  • (04:00)  We replaced apprenticeship with consumption: mixing the paint before touching the canvas
  • (04:40) 163 views for something beautiful; thousands for lemon juice in olive oil
  • (06:39) The mantra: you cannot consistently photograph what you refuse to cultivate within yourself
  • (07:59) Wonder, romance, patience — and the Walter Mitty snow leopard
  • (9:40) A burgundy leaf, seven droplets of rain — and why your camera is honest
  • (11:06) The 4 S’s turned ninety degrees — Story (11:21) · Style (12:19) · Structure (13:29) · Sales as trust (14:16)
  • (15:20) Creative Studies — naming the thing the industry is missing
  • (17:15)  Studies to do at home: hands, wind, candlelight, lace, the faces of old women
  • (19:04)  “Content is dead and dying — and it will kill your artistry”
  • (20:42) Confession #2: bored at weddings, the coasting season, the renaissance year
  • (24:26) Become a student again: the Robert Redford phase, one painter, one poet
  • (26:25) Why The English Edit exists — and Claire’s story (28:30)
  • (30:29)  The challenge: one study this week — kitchen-table light, one poem, an antique store, one roll of film

Brave Questions:

  • What have you actually been studying for the last decade — and what has it trained your eye to see?
  • Which of the 4 S’s — story, style, structure, sales — have you never once studied as an artist?
  • What would you study for eight weeks if no one ever saw the results?
  • Where has your work gone competent instead of alive — and when did you stop noticing?
  • Watch the light cross your kitchen table at 8:15, at 11, and at dusk. What changed — in the light, and in you?
