The Psychology Secrets for Happy Clients with Jodi Anne and D'Arcy Benincosa on The Play It Brave Podcast

Do your photoshoots feel cookie cutter? Do you ever have an unhappy client? Are you just looking to find better ways to connect with and pose your clients? Today’s guest is a psychology expert and talented photographer, Jodi Anne, who has some really helpful methods backed by psychology to create a better client experience full of trust, communication, and beautiful photos that don’t feel posed. Tune in to hear all her secrets!

About Jodi Anne:

Jodi is an accomplished international wedding photographer and a single-mom to three incredible future-gentlemen.  She holds a Master’s degree in Educational & School Psychology and somehow juggles it all with candid humor and deep authenticity.  She uses her years of studying Psychology and human behavior to ease her clients into her photoshoots with grace, and creates images that convey true emotion and connection due to her signature shooting method.

She squeezes business calls in between double-headers.  She meets with florists and designers after school drop-off and dentist appointments.  All the while she also transforms wedding details and memories into heirloom images that serve as the building blocks to her client’s dawning legacies.  Her everyday life presents the chaos that serves as her very own wedding-day bootcamp.  She thrives in the frenzy and feeds off of the energy… which allows her to expertly navigate bustling wedding days with precision and laughter.

Jodi has taken her love of composition and intertwined it with a pervasive study of human expression in order to build a business that has her clients singing her praises and a body of work that speaks even higher volumes.  Her work is calculated and precise yet also… effortless, calm and alluring.

Social Comparison & Managing Expectations with Your Clients:

  • Social Comparison Process: We’re going to compare ourselves to the people around us.
  • Social Comparison comes in when we compare ourselves to other photographers on the internet who are maybe way further ahead in their career.
  • It also comes in for our clients when they’re on Pinterest and see a photo they like that is taken by a photographer during golden hour, but maybe their wedding won’t take place during golden hour.
  • When a client comes to you wanting a certain look, this is your time to manage their expectations in a confident and POSITIVE manner.
  • Managing expectations is a huge part in having a happy client

Human Behavior and Client Comfortability:

  • Every time our clients are stepping into a photoshoot with us, they’re stepping into a new experience and there’s anxiety around that.
  • If you can’t get them to the place of feeling comfortable, then you’re going to fail at making them feel beautiful and having a great experience. You have to understand human behavior.

Client Communication:

  • The client experience is so much more than sending a booking gift. It’s MORE about the language that you use when you communicate them.
  • If they have never posed before, YOU are the key to unlocking their comfortability.
  • The first thing you should say to your client is YES – tune in to hear what she means!
  • When you have these YES experiences, you gain trust from your clients and they want to keep coming back for more advice, which in turn allows you to control the look and feel of your shoots.

Resolving Conflict with Your Clients:

  • Never respond to something right away. Take 24 hours and remove your ego from it.
  • Don’t air your dirty laundry on the internet or throw a temper tantrum publicly about something a client did or said.

Jodi’s Secret Dirty Way to Direct People Quickly:

Direct them by their genital areas!

  • “Point your penis towards the tree”
  • Tell all the groomsmen “nuts to butts” and bridesmaids “vaginey’s to hiney’s” in group shots
