I took last week off from all work when my oldest sister and my niece came to visit NYC. My sister lives in a small town in Utah, doesn’t travel much, and is passionate about gardening. She loves walking in the morning in her quiet neighborhood, volunteering with the PTA (she’s got FIVE kids!) and baking the best muffins you’ve ever tasted. When she was walking around NYC, everything seemed loud and dirty (it is!), the food was all way too expensive (it is!), she didn’t want to go out to any museum or amazing galleries, and she wasn’t even impressed when I took her to my favorite posh lunch spot on the top of Bergdorfs (you have to get a reservation for that place!). Things that I love to do held absolutely NO appeal to her at all.

My sister and I have really really different ideas for what it means to be successful in life. To me, success is making really good money, traveling the world any time I want, having a NYC apartment, and helping people grow their businesses. To her, success is raising well mannered children (they are amazing kids), taking care of her home and husband, and training for marathons.

The beauty–neither of us is wrong.

The hard part–we have to REALLY not care what the other thinks of us and have to work hard to relate to each other sometimes. To my sister, my life looks expensive and selfish. To me, her life looks a little boring and location limited. And yet, we are BOTH ultimately successful in what we want to be doing with our lives.

And that’s the TRUE key to success! You can’t measure it by anyone else’s standards.

You have to get clear on what it is you want in life, not what anyone wants for you, and you have to go after it with ALL YOU’VE GOT!
